 Our Core Values

Two Swords (Rhode Island) BJJ Academy draws its inspiration and core values from the Samurai. These ethics or values focus on attitude, compassion, integrity, discipline, honor, loyalty, respect and most important family. All students are taught that the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu path is a long and hard road. It is a marathon not a sprint. Each student understands that everyone at the school is going through the same thing, but we are all going through it together. The mantra “if I make you better…you will make me better” is extremely important to the school values at Two Swords (Rhode Island) Jiu-Jitsu Academy. The school believes in the strengthening of the individual by challenging the mind and spirit. These philosophies makes the school as a whole stronger. We welcome all students who are ready to commit to these values and study martial arts as a true-life path at our Newport, Rhode Island location.

Origins

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and its techniques. It was derived from the samurai martial art of Jiu-Jitsu. Samurai used Jiu-Jitsu in case they were disarmed.
Years later, Master Helio Gracie took these Samuari techniques and refined them into a new Jiu-Jitsu, which is now Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). BJJ promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against bigger, stronger assailants using leverage and proper technique. Here in our Rhode Island Academy, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not about who knows the most positions and techniques, but rather who makes the most efficient and quickest decisions while executing the technique with proper physical and mental mechanics. Which in turn keeps the body, mind and soul at peak performance no matter your age.

Master Helio Gracie’s inspirational spirit is profoundly present in our Rhode Island Academy and can be seen in the present day evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It seems that every year there are new techniques and ways to combine them with each other. Two Swords (Rhode Island)Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a true art. Other martial arts have a set number of techniques and a certain way to learn them. Our Rhode Island Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has hundreds of techniques to learn from which allows the martial artist to pick and chose what works best for him or her. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is presently one of the core components of both the Army and Marine Corps Combatives Systems.

“What the Samurai did with their swords we do with our hands.”

-Grand Master Helio Gracie (October 1, 1913 – January 29, 2009)

“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lifestyle, a family. For people who don’t have real family situations, it’s a home. It offers you everything: it’s self-defense and it’s a psychiatrist. I never thought that I would find anything that is this fascinating.”

-Joel Tudor (World Champion Surfer) (Black Belt National Champion)
